Tough question. Or maybe not.
I have BIG visions for my life and for the world. Visions that have led to some of the most inspiring moments I’ve ever known.
And big visions that have overwhelmed me with how illogical/impractical they seem; pretty pictures that distract me from the day-to-day business of running a business.
Can a big vision really get in the way of growing your business?
Like yoga or juicing — just because it’s good for you doesn’t mean you let it run your life. You have to create a context for it.
One of my visions is to create a world where people do not relate to each other by color or creed. The same dream Martin Luther King shared. We see the person first, whether they are Muslim, Jewish, or African-American. The person always comes first, not our past associations with “their kind.”
What does this have to do with being a masterful sales trainer? Or solving an urgent problem for my clients?
Nothing, I was told by everyone. Zip. Nada. Zilch. Nobody wants to hear it. All they care about is what’s keeping them awake at 2 am. Solve the urgent problem. Mentioning MLK only creates clutter and confusion. And on and on, I was told…
So while going for one of my head-clearing neighborhood walks recently, I saw something. It turned out it was the perfect message at the perfect time. (See photo)
Live a Great Story.
As a screenwriter, I know that we only write about people who are THE FIRST to do something. Not the second, not the third. The First Ones. The Pioneers, the Rulebreakers, the Iconoclasts who Risked Big and Achieved Big.
Since I saw that sticker message, a peace has settled in.
I know I am meant to hear “it can’t be done and “you’re crazy.” I meant to have people throw their doubts and fears up at me, and I’m probably meant to feel my own doubts and fears. That’s how I know I’m on the right track.
It’s all part of the journey. All part of being The First.
All part of saying yes to life.
So my question for you is, how are you being the first?
Maybe it’s breaking the cycle of alcohol addiction in your family. Maybe it’s inventing something that gets people finally off their smart phones. We all have something.
Whatever it is — the fact is, you are uniquely you. Which means by being you, and honoring that more and more, you will always be the first to do something.
And over time, many things.
Many, many, many things.
With much love,
